Support for Work with Picture Information
One special feature shared by the formats commonly used for digital photographs (JPEG and TIFF) is the "metadata" part of files. We call it by the friendlier term "picture information." The vast majority of devices for taking digital photographs stores supplementary information in the EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) format alongside the graphical data. EXIF data stores information like the shutter speed, exposure time, flash, sensitivity, etc. On average, 20 pieces of information are stored. You can also include other items such as a title, description, author, etc. Zoner Photo Studio 9 supports EXIF, including its latest standard, 2.2 (EXIF PRINT).
Other information can be stored under the IPTC (IMM - Information Interchanges Model) and XMP (eXtensible Metadata Platform) standards. Zoner Photo Studio also displays and saves information stored in these formats, thus expanding the data's usability for other applications, like Adobe programs, that make use of them. Meanwhile, external XMP descriptions make it possible to add picture information even to RAW files.
When storing data under XMP and when adding comments and keywords in EXIF format, you can even store data in Unicode encoding. This gives you the possibility of descriptions in any combination of world languages. This is true no matter what language your version of Windows is in.
Picture information also includes information about where a shot was taken (GPS data). Zoner Photo Studio contains a wide range of options for work with this data.
Modifying and Backing up Picture Information
Picture information is a very important part of every digital picture. Work with it is fundamental to creating a digital archive, and thus this data is very valuable. None of the Zoner Photo Studio 10 functions destroy picture information (except for the command that deliberately deletes it). Zoner Photo Studio 10 also preserves and does not modify the special data that differs from camera maker to camera maker - the "Maker Note." This information is preserved in every situation, unlike in many competing programs, where they are removed in the case where the given program does not support them.
However, by editing photos in various programs, especially older ones, a user can partially or completely lose this information. For example, rotating a picture in the Windows picture viewer will cause the loss of this information. Therefore, Zoner Photo Studio offers the ability to completely back it up and restore it (including the EXIF thumbnail) for cases of its damage/destruction.
